At McCollum Hearing Center we will help you recover those sounds that are so precious! We offer a free comprehensive screening and individualized consultation in which the best suited options to improve your hearing will be discussed. At our office you can always expect a comfortable atmosphere with professional competence, respect and caring service. We extend to our patients a Risk-Free 45-day Trial Period to ensure satisfaction with your hearing aids. There is also 12-Month No-Interest Financing available* to our patients.
We want all of your contacts with your hearing care professionals to be as smooth and comfortable as possible. As you enter our office, you will be warmly greeted and asked to fill out new patient forms and a brief questionnaire about your hearing.
Next you will meet with our hearing aid specialist who will go over the questionnaire with you and ask you some questions regarding your case history. The case history will include questions pertaining to previous medical problems with the ears (such as ear infections), current medications, history of noise exposure, ringing in your ears, family history of hearing loss and the different areas in which you may be experiencing hearing difficulties, such as restaurants and group settings.
Spouses, family and friends are encouraged and always welcome to accompany you to your appointment.
Our comprehensive hearing evaluation takes approximately 60 minutes. You will be taken into a soundproof test room where we will examine your ears with an otoscope to look at the health of your outer ear canal and eardrum. Then headphones are placed on your ears for tone testing to determine how softly you can hear different pitches or tones. Speech testing is also conducted to determine how softly you can understand words and how clearly you can understand words spoken at different sound levels.
After the evaluation has been completed, our hearing aid specialist will review the findings with you and if desired, any friends or family members that are present. We will explain the results of the test and its relationship to hearing, speech, and environmental sounds. If a hearing loss has been diagnosed, we will discuss the prospect of obtaining help through the use of hearing aids. Factoring in your needs and lifestyle, we will recommend options for appropriate types and styles of hearing aids that are available and best-suited for your needs.
If you decide to pursue hearing aids, impressions may be taken of your ears (depending on the type of instrument recommended) and an appointment to fit you with the hearing aids will be scheduled. If impressions are not needed you may be able to receive your new hearing aids promptly at this appointment. At this point, we will program the hearing aids based on your hearing loss and perform verification testing with the hearing aids to ensure that you are hearing properly. You will be shown all aspects regarding the mechanics of the hearing aids, required care and maintenance, and proper usage.
Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor progress as well as fine tune aspects of the hearing aids that will help to optimize listening capabilities.
During the follow-up visits a test will be conducted called Real Ear Measurement (REM). This test will measure the amplificaion of your hearing aids. It is performed, while the hearing aids are on, by placing a tiny microphone in the ear. The REM will then allow for the hearing aids to be precisely fine-tuned to your individual hearing loss.
*Financing available to those that qualify.
